Lesson-Based Assessment (LBA) in Karnataka Schools

For the 2025–26 academic year, the Karnataka Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) has introduced a new evaluation system called Lesson-Based Assessment (LBA) for Classes 1 to 10 in all government, aided, and unaided schools.

This innovative approach focuses on assessing students after each lesson, not just at the end of a term — ensuring that learning gaps are identified and corrected immediately.

At Vidyadeevige.com, we are committed to helping students succeed in this new model. Our team continuously posts chapter-wise notes, important questions, and model LBA papers for SSLC students across Karnataka.

What Is Lesson-Based Assessment (LBA) in Karnataka

The Lesson-Based Assessment (LBA) is a continuous and practical learning evaluation method designed to:

  • 📖 Assess student understanding immediately after each lesson

  • 🧮 Improve concept clarity and retention

  • 🔍 Identify learning gaps early

  • 📱 Use mobile app-based evaluation for transparency and speed

All question papers are prepared by DSERT, ensuring uniformity across schools.Teachers then conduct short assessments after every chapter or concept, and results are uploaded through the official LBA mobile app for quick analysis.

🎯Objectives of Lesson-Based Assessment (LBA)

The main objectives of introducing Lesson-Based Assessment (LBA) in Karnataka schools are:

  1. To improve student learning and confirm understanding after each lesson.

  2. To reduce examination pressure on students.

  3. To minimize dependence on traditional exams and instead enhance learning abilities through continuous evaluation.

  4. To ensure attainment of specific learning outcomes through regular analysis and follow-up.

  5. To promote inclusive education, encouraging participation and assessment of students at all learning levels.

  6. To strengthen teachers’ assessment skills, including oral, practical, peer, project-based, portfolio, and self-assessment techniques.

  7. To monitor student learning continuously throughout the academic year.

  8. To keep parents informed about their child’s learning progress at every stage.

  9. To align the Lesson-Based Assessment framework with the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system, integrating classroom learning with continuous assessment — rather than relying only on exam-based evaluation.

📘 Structure and Use of LBA Question Papers
  1. The question papers are prepared by mapping each lesson’s content and learning outcomes, ensuring questions match objectives and difficulty levels.

  2. For Classes 1 to 7, question papers include both objective and descriptive questions to comprehensively assess understanding.

  3. For Classes 8 to 10, question papers follow the SSLC exam model, with a greater number of multiple-choice and descriptive questions.

  4. Schools must use these question papers mandatorily during all forms of internal assessment — including FA (Formative Assessment) 1, 2, 3 & 4, SA (Summative Assessment) 1, CCE, preparatory exams, and annual exams.

📏 Marks Distribution and Evaluation Method
  • Classes 1–5:Prepare a 25-mark question paper including both objective and descriptive questions for each lesson and conduct Lesson-Based Assessment (Unit Test).

  • Classes 6–7:Conduct Lesson-Based Assessment for 25 marks total —➤ 20 marks from the LBA question bank, and➤ 5 marks from reinforcement/revision questions.

  • Classes 8–10:Conduct Lesson-Based Assessment (Unit Test) for 25 marks total —➤ 20 marks from the LBA question bank (MCQs, 1–5 mark questions), and➤ 5 marks from reinforcement/revision questions, following the SSLC question paper model.

📊 Use of LBA Data for Improvement

Based on SATS analytical reports, students will be grouped into:

  • Below Average,

  • Average, and

  • Above Average categories.

Teachers will then conduct remedial teaching sessions tailored to each group to ensure all students achieve the required learning outcomes.

Additionally:

  • Schools will implement remedial teaching effectively by involving local resources and community support.

  • Teachers must continuously monitor and record learning progress of every student in the classroom.

The Lesson-Based Assessment (LBA) framework marks a transformative step in Karnataka’s education system. It shifts the focus from exam scores to real understanding, making assessments more inclusive, data-driven, and student-centered.

By integrating continuous feedback, digital tools, and structured question banks, LBA ensures that every child — regardless of background — progresses confidently through the academic year.
